A friend took me for breakfast in South Orange, and it was so remarkable that I took my daughter for lunch the very next day. Yes, I really couldn't wait to return.
It was that good!
If you don't mind taking a drive and live in northern New Jersey near Union, Morris or Essex counties, or you happen to find yourself in and around South Orange New Jersey for breakfast or lunch one day, make sure to pop in to Jackie & Son. This casual spot serves up amazing Mediterranean-influenced fare in a perfect setting, and I imagine it is already a neighborhood favorite. Located right on South Orange Avenue, its simple and clean decor will make you feel like you're in a trendy neighborhood in New York City or Seattle.
Favorite things?
(We haven't tried everything, but so far here are a few of our favorite things.)

the decor- Love it! Especially the wall-mounted kraft paper dispensers.
baklava -Solid technique with just the right amount of sweetness, nuts and crispy, light phyllo. I say, indulge!
halva tahini brownies- Wow! I make great brownies+ (so I've been told) but these are unreal! Decadent, dark, moist. Their richness and complexity elevate a seemingly kids' dessert to something so much more. I think I need to go get another one!
meze heaven- The 3 (mujadara-hearty! eggplant salad-vibrant! portobello mushrooms-I love anything mushroom!) I have tried so far have been delicious! Lots of flavor whether you are eating plant based or not. Can't wait to try more!
omelettes- Delicious, but those truffle fries? Yum!
Be in the know!
(Helpful hints we think that you should... well know.)

Visit South Orange on a nice day and start at Jackie & Son, then take a stroll to the Farmer's Market if it's in session. Your taste buds will thank me!
+From Our Kitchen
(Not a recipe from the restaurant, but something from our kitchen we wanted to share.)

Here's my all-time favorite recipe for brownies that many people have requested. They are yummy and slightly gooey and really hit the spot when you are craving a fairly quick, homemade treat.
